On Friday we had our muffin lab. Each group made a different kind of muffin, then we did a tasters table. it was interesting to see how the muffins turned out. The Raspberry Crumble muffins, in both classes, turned out great! The Orange Cranberry muffins turned out a little flat in both classes, but the flavor was great. And the Pumpkin Chocolate Chip turned out with holes in the middle... hmmm. Wonder what could have caused that....

Pasta! And Rice!
Today in Foods we continued talking about carbs. We talked about the difference between whole grain products and white products. Students sampled 3 different kinds of pastas (one veggie pasta, one whole wheat, and one enriched) and 2 different rices (wild/long grain combo and a brown rice). Many students admitted they had never sampled several of the options and that they enjoyed them.
Caramel Popcorn
Old Folks Day
In Teen Living we have been talking about families. And since the elderly are an important part of every family we spent some time discussing the aging process. Students participated in an "aging simulation" so they could experience what happens as the body ages. Here is a pic of the students wearing their glasses.
The red glasses distorted their vision and their perception of color. They had cotton balls in their ears to simulate hearing loss and tape on their fingers to simulate arthritis. It made for a challenging class period. Students ended up talking really loud to each other so they could hear each other. It was fun!

Cookie Lab
Yesterday in Foods we had our cookie lab. each lab group made a different kind of cookie, then we did a tasters table. For the most part, the cookies turned out really well... they tasted good anyway. Some of the groups the cookies turned out a little more like bars, than cookies. We will discuss why that might have happened next time. :-)
This group was all working really well together and as soon as I walked up with a camera, they all stopped working!

Japan Visitors
Last week we had an exchange with some Japanese students from Ibagawa, Japan. It was so much fun to host them for the morning. The gentleman in this pic is a representative of the city offices in Ibagawa. He is over Education. He works in the same office as Kimi, the man who home-stayed with us last year when the exchange was done.
The student council did a great job planning and hosting the students. We all had a great time!
