Get the FACS of Life

As a ninth grader there are 3 FACS classes you can take:

1. Teen Living- This course helps students understand and cope with personal, family and social challenges.  Emphasis is placed on communication, decision making skills, and building stable relationships with family and peers. This course enables students to implement positive coping mechanisms and promotes understanding of self.  It addresses issues that impact teenagers: self-concept, family and peer relationships, substance abuse, personal loss, dating and teenage pregnancy, and child abuse.  Emphasis is placed on students taking personal responsibility for life.

2. Sports and Outdoor Clothing- At the end of this course students will be able to choose a commercial pattern in his/her skill range and construct an article by reading and following the written directions on the guide sheet.  Students will have mastered basic sewing techniques by completing construction projects in class.  There is a $15 lab fee for this course. Students will make some awesome projects in this class.

3. Food and Nutrition I- This course is designed to introduce students to the world of nutrition. Students who are interested in understanding the principles of nutrition and in maintaining a healthy life style will benefit from this course.  Attention will be given to the selection and preparation of food and personal health and well-being. Students will eat nearly everyday!! This course is especially valuable for student athletes!!

Muffins

The Foods classes had their muffin lab today.  Here are some of the muffins we made...

 Wonder what happened here...
 These turned out good!

Quick Breads vs Yeast Breads

The Foods class has been learning the differences between quick breads and yeast breads.  So today we did a lab making biscuits, cornbread and bread sticks. Here are some of the products!

Rice, Pasta, Quinoa, and Couscous!

The Foods classes continued to learn about carbs by doing a rice/pasta lab.  The students tasted 6 different grain products: brown rice, wild rice, vegi noodles, whole wheat noodles, couscous and quinoa.  It was fun to be able to see/taste/discuss the differences. :)

Carmel Popcorn

Students in Foods class last week made carmel popcorn.  Some of the students in foods had never used a popcorn popper before so it was kind of fun to see. We had started our unit on carbs so we identified the compex starches (the popcorn) and the simple sugars (the carmel topping) during our lab.

Imagination!!

In FACS we had our imagination day last week.  It was fun to see what kind of creatures and stories the students made up.  Some of the stories got a little morbid and at lease one story in every class involved Justin Beber, but overall good stories. :)

Breakfast Lab in Foods

On Wednesday in Foods we made breakfast- Crepes, Belgian waffles, Stuffed French Toast, German Pancakes, and Barnum's Syrup (otherwise known as liquid gold). The students did a pretty good job considering the tools we have to work with.
