Imagination

Today in FACS students used their imagination to draw a creature. Then they had to communicate to a partner, verbally, how to draw their creation. it was fun to listen to and watch. Some of the results were... interesting. These girls did a pretty good job!

Baby Birthday

Today in Teen Living babies were born. Dr. Bench visited class to "deliver" the babies. It was so great! There was so much anticipation in the room as each student took their turn with labor. Dr. Bench got one student good. She was half way back to her seat, when he said, "Wait! There is another one on its way!" See the look of stunned surprise on her face! Classic.
This is her, picking up her second beautiful daughter. Just as a side note... she did get twin girls. She asked about 15 minutes later if she could switch them to boys. I told her it didn't work like that. You take what you get. :-)
We had a couple of proud parents who wanted to be present for their first grandchild come visit class as well. It was fun to have them come. :-)

After delivery I gave students the rest of the hour to dress their babies. What a fun group!

Potato Nacho's

Just another way of saying... Cheesy Fries!! The Foods classes made these last week. This was an easy lab and I think the students really enjoyed them. They were baked... not fried.

Hair Care Guest Speakers

Last week in Fashion we had Paul Mitchell Hair School come to chat with us about hair care. They showed us a variety of their hair care products and explained what it is they do. Then they gave out free samples. They discussed different face shapes and hair styles that look good on various face shapes. They also did some make-up and gave tips on how to apply make-up.

Late Post...

This was last week, but I just saw the pic on my camera and realized I had forgotten to post about it. This was our last lab in FACS. The students made Chicken Pillows. It was the first time I had tried the recipe with students and for the most part, they all enjoyed it. The students that struggled with it, didn't read the directions.

Kids Learn Through Play

Today in FACS we started our Child Development unit. We discussed how kids learn best through play, so we practiced some of the old finger plays and games that kids like to play. We did the "Hokey Pokey", we did "Thumbkin", and we did "Itsy Bitsy Spider". Here is a pic of the kids playing "Duck, Duck, Goose!" So much fun!

Pizza... Finally!

The FACS students have been sooooooo excited for the pizza lab and today it finally happened. I saw some very clever pizza's today. Oh, and my room was really hot, but it did smell good!

Fashion Strip Mall

In Fashion the students have been learning about consumerism in fashion. They made a little strip mall to help learn about the different store types.

Thunder Lab

Today was Thunder Lab day in FACS. Students made Thunder Juice (Orange Julius) and Thunder Twists (Pretzels). It was fun to see some of the pretzel shapes. I had snakes, rolly-twists, peace signs, and others. The classes did great. Some of the best clean-up jobs I have seen. A great benefit of teaching foods is that once again my room smelled yummy!

Eggs Benedict

Yesterday in Foods we made Eggs Benedict. My room smelled great! I think most of the students really enjoyed them.

Cheese Gromet?

In Foods we tried making cheese. It looked so easy at my summer conference... wasn't so easy in class. After trying for 2 periods I ended up taking it home to finish it over the weekend. Here is the results of my efforts...
We will taste it in Foods today... more to come!

Aprons

The FACS class is just about done in the clothing lab. We have been working on making aprons since last week. The aprons aren't due until next class, but these two girls finished today and their aprons look great!! Way to go ladies!
As far as pillowcase pics... my camera malfunctioned and I lost the pics of the pillowcases (and a few others) I had. Bummer, because they were great too. Sorry.

Rice n' Pasta

In Foods we had a rice and pasta lab. Students made 3 different kinds of pasta and 3 different kinds of rice. They then did a tasters table. We talked about the nutritional value of each and what they did in the body.

Muffin Lab

In Foods we have been talking about carbs. The biscuit method and the muffin methoed are included in that. For the muffin lab, students made 6 different kinds of muffins. Here are some of the results. This group made pumpkin apple. They didn't let them cool before they wre removed from the oven. They also filled the muffin tin too much. They may not be pretty, but they tasted good. This group made pumpkin chocolate chip muffins. Notice the cauliflower top. Well done! This group made raspberry pecan muffins. Again, notice the cauliflower top. This group made orange cranberry muffins. Notice the flat top. That is a result of under-mixing. They tasted yummy though!

Extra Sew Time

Today in my FACS classes pillowcases were due. I didn't get a pic of a pillowcase (don't worry, I will tomorrow), but I did get a pic of this cute headband a student made when she was done with her project. She made it with the materials in the scrap can. Cute huh!

Carmel Popcorn

We started learning about carbs last week in Foods. The students had a mini lab making carmel popcorn to help teach the concepts... plus it gave them something to snack on while we took notes!

Senior Simulation Day

In Teen Living last week (I know, I am a big-behind on my posting... last week was chaos) we had a senior simulation day so students would get a simulated effect of aging. Not very realistic, but it gets the point across. The students had a good time with it I think. This is a pic of them wearing "glasses" to impare their vision a little. They were doing a memory game... it was fun to see them get into it! They had cotton balls in their ears to decrease their hearing and tape on their fingers to simulate arthritis.

Breads Lab

On Monday, the Foods students had their bread lab. I was in Salt Lake at the State Office of Education helping to update the Foods State Exam so I wasn't here for the lab, but from what I hear it was great. A student sent me a pic of their groups product. I have been trying to get it up, but it isn't cooperating. Sorry!

On Friday in Foods we had the breakfast lab. Students make stuffed french toast, buttermilk waffles, crepes and german pancakes. Everything was so good! They also made some of Barnum's homemade syrup. YUM!

Cookies... I think...

So last Friday the Foods class made cookies. A student came up to me and said, "I think we did something wrong." Enter the opportunity for a learning experience. Let's see... what went wrong?

Here is a pic of a group that did a great job! Ahhhh, the sweet smell of success!

Design Teaser

The Fashion students have been practicing their sketching. I am so impressed! Here is a pic of what we have coming up...

Couple of Updates...

In Fashion we are preparing to start work on fashion portfolios, so today students learned about croquis and some basic sketching tips. Then they had time to practice. :-) I am looking forward to seeing their designs!
In Teen Living we have been talking about communication. I had the students stack a set of cups in a pyramid shape to help get the point across. The could not touch the cups with their hands, only the "tool" I gave them to work with, and they could not verbally communicate. It was fun to see them work together to accomplish their task.

Thunder Lab

Yesterday was the first full lab in Foods. They made pretzels and orange julius. Of course, we called them Thunder Twists and Thunder Juice, but no matter. It is spirit week after all. The lab was a little rushed due to the assembly, but the students got it done.

Moods Game...

Today in Teen Living we talked about emotions and moods. We then played a moods game where students said a common saying in a certain mood. For example, try saying "Come on in. The waters fine." in a romantic mood. It was hilarious to hear some of the sayings.

Today in Foods we had our first mini lab. It was a little rushed, but the cookies turned out good. My room smells nice anyway. Here are a couple of pics of the students hard at work!

Fashion Capital Games

Today in Fashion my students finished creating their fashion capital games. Then they played them! It was fun to hear them laugh and giggle over the games. Here are a few pics. I was very impressed with what they created!
