Favorite Recipe Day!

Today, in Foods, students got to make their favorite recipe from the year. On Monday, they decided what they were making and how much of everything they would need from the recipe. If it wasn't on their sheet, they couldn't use it. We had some great products! Here is a picture of some students enjoying Fettuccine Alfredo!

Great Job Guys! I will sure miss you!!!

Hair Dos!

In Fashion, last Thursday, we had Paul Mitchell come as a guest speaker to finish off our Unit 6 Work. As part of their presentation, they did everyone's hair! Here are some pictures!

Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo

Today the Foods classes FINALLY made Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo. They have been waiting to do this for a couple days now, and they FINALLY got to make it! They loved it and really enjoyed it! So much better when it's homemade! And it smelled good too! Mr. Stevenson's mouth was watering!

Great Job today guys!!!

We hope you have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!

Cookie Lab

Yesterday, the FACS Classes had a cookie lab. They made one of 2 cookies (Snickerdoodle and Chocolate Chip) and they got to have a taste of the other kind of cookie. Students loved the cookies and had a really fun time making them. In 4th period, we had a little learning experience. We had to use butter instead of shortening and it was amazing to see how much more flour they needed just by using butter! Some of the cookies turned out really flat and sticky. But, they are still good! Good job guys!

Thunder Lab

Today in FACS, the students got to make Thunder Twists (Pretzels) and Thunder Juice (Smoothies). Today was a learning day for the students. They learned how to work together and get things done. 4th period finished with about 5 minutes to spare! The students loved the food and had a lot of fun cooking today. Here are some pictures!

Good Job Guys!!!
(Also...my FACS classes are currently the world's best cleaners. My room looks awesome...way to go 8th graders. Show those 9th graders how to do it!)

Chocolate Goop

In FACS Exploration, we have started our cooking units! Students finished their aprons, and they turned out great!

On Friday, Nov. 11, the students got to go into the lab and cook for the first time! They were given a No-Bake Cookie recipe, that wasn't extremely clear. They had to decipher what certain words meant and the various amounts that it could mean, and in the end I only had a few groups turn out even remotely close to what they should look like. We talked about why measuring is important and that we have a standardized system so that it is the same wherever you are. Students loved cooking, but didn't like that their product turned out like goop...

Great Job Guys!
More Cooking to Come!!!

Eggs Benedict Arnold!

Every time I said Eggs Benedict in one of my classes, they would add Arnold and then start talking about Hey Arnold...it was quite hilarious!

Today, in Foods, we made Eggs Benedict. For most of the students, this was their first time poaching an egg, making hollandaise sauce, and trying this new idea. From what I heard, most of them will make it when they get home! It is a yummy, (but SUPER fattening) recipe that the students ended up loving, even though they didn't think they would.

Apparently, this student didn't like it as much...
He just hadn't tried it yet.

Good Job Guys!

Fashion Designs

These students are so much more creative than I ever could be. Just look at these designs!

This one is amazing! (And it's all painted)

That wasn't even all of my favorites, but I didn't want to overload the post. I'm so proud of my students and the work they did on this project! It was a lot!

Do You Know the Muffin Man?

Well, if you don't, I'm sure your student could tell you they can make them just as good as he can! On October 3, the students in the Foods 1 Class made muffins, and boy were they tasty! Here are some pictures! (I'm sorry about the quality...I forgot my camera that day, but lucky enough had my iPod!)

The spread. We had Pumpkin Chocolate Chip, Pumpkin Apple Streusel, Lemon Strawberry Streusel, Raspberry Pecan Streusel, Orange Cranberry, and Maui Muffins. They were so good!

These were the pumpkin apple streusel muffins. When the groups first got this one, they weren't so happy, but then after making them realized they were delicious. Can't beat Pumpkin in a muffin!

Mock Preschool

On Sept. 28th (forever ago) the FACS Exploration students got to go to preschool! They did activities that challenged them as 8th graders, which was the whole concept of the child development unit. We wanted students to understand that when you take care of a child, the activities need to be at their level. The students had a really fun time and really enjoyed the activities.

The math group. They were thrilled with this as you can see :)
They rolled two dice to try and add up to 100, but if they rolled ones, there were different consequences that happened.

This is the Small Motor Group. They were to put together a puzzle with their eyes closed! I was surprised at how good they got at it!

This is the science group. They had Whole Milk and food coloring. They dipped a toothpick in "magic juice" (soap) and watched what happened.

This was the Art group. They were to write letters to their friends, but without using any words. It was really hard for them!

Pretty sure this was the kids' favorite-the snack group. They got to make faces out of bread, peanut butter, twizzlers, chocolate chips and coconut.

And last but not least, the reading group. They sat for 8 minutes and read children's books.

I'd say that's a pretty fun day in school! Wish I had it that easy! ;)

Holy Update Batman!

I'm am such a slacker! I can't believe I haven't been updating this, especially since we've been having SO much fun in class! The next few postings are from the last couple of weeks. We have begun a new quarter, and most of the students did fairly well last quarter. I'm excited to spend a little bit more time with the students. I don't know what it is going to be like when I leave! (I'll be REALLY sad)

Breakfast Lab

I've been busy and haven't update yet! Last week, on the 19th, the Foods classes got to make a lot of yummy breakfast food. My room smelled really good! They made stuffed french toast, crepes, german pancakes, and waffles. They did a great job, and there were definitely some learning experiences for the students! Here are some pictures...

This is the syrup the classes made. In one of my classes, they didn't follow directions on the milk, so they put regular milk instead of evaporated milk. You can see that it is a lot more runny, and not mixed as well as the one below.

The spread of goodness.
(German Pancakes not pictured)

And some cheese-ers from the students.
They really enjoyed the food and had a lot of fun!

Room Designs!

This last week in FACS Exploration, the students have been working on the Room Designs. They were to take a shoe box and design a room using the Principles and Elements of Design that we talked about in class. Some of the projects I received were amazing! So detailed and very creative! I wish I could post all the pictures...because seriously, they are so cool!

This girl put so much work into hers! The floors are perfectly pieced together and the furniture is just outstanding.

The detail in this room is awesome! I love the pool balls.

This is such a fun room and so much detail.

Seriously, most of my students went above and beyond the expectation! I am so proud of them!

Cookie Lab

Today the Foods classes made cookies! My room smelled awesome! They had a lot of fun, and really enjoyed the sweet treats. Here are just a few pictures.

(Sorry...don't know why the picture is sideways.)
These are the sugar cookies. They even made me one just for me. They were good!

(Again..the picture is sideways)
These were the snickerdoodles. These girls did a really good job on their cookies and in their lab.

I wasn't able to snap a picture of it, but there was a group that didn't put enough flour in their product at first, so their cookies turned into a flat, gooey mess. It was definitely a learning experience for these students!

Hope you have a good weekend!

Cookie Color Wheels

Today in FACS Exploration, we made cookie color wheels. The students used frosting and food coloring to make the different colors on the color wheel. It was a fun activity for them to do and
something yummy for them to eat! Here are some pictures! (Sorry they are kinda yellow...some of my settings on my camera were funky...)

These girls had the brightest and coolest colors on their wheel so I wanted to snap a picture of them with their work of art!

Also, Mrs. Barnum had her baby! He was born yesterday (Sept. 5) and weighed 9 lbs. 7 oz. and was 21 inches long! Both Mom and Baby are doing great. I (Miss Langston, her student teacher) will be teaching the class and can't wait to work more with the students!
Here is the handsome Benjamin!

Congrats Mrs. Barnum!

House Building

Today in FACS we had a house building contest. Students' houses were judged on Aesthetics, Height, and ability to hold a weight (the weight of a stapler). It was fun to see the creations! Here are a couple...

Thunder Lab

Today Foods had their first full lab. It was the Thunder Lab. Students made Thunder Juice (orange Julius) and Thunder Twists (pretzels). My room smelled great, but it was really HOT!!! With 7 ovens going my room heated up pretty quickly. I am looking forward to the day when the district decides to turn the air back on!! Good job though guys! The pretzels look great!

Salsa!!!

Today the Foods classes made fresh salsa! My room smells awesome!!! Cilantro and garlic! Mmmmm... doesn't get any better. :-) Students munched on their chips and salsa while we took notes.

Shake Out Your Future!

Today, the FACS Exploration classes played a game similar to MASH. They rolled a dice to determine what they would achieve in their life. The game was a new one and something the students really enjoyed. There were a lot of "lives" that were completely different than what they were expecting!
