Stir Fry

I took this pic a little too late! Most of their food was already gone! But the stir fry lab was a success. My room smells AMAZING!!! I think I will make it for dinner tonight for my fam! 3rd period needs to work a little on multi-tasking (cooking the rice while the stir fry is being prepared), but it all worked out. :-)

All kinds of things...

I have been wanting to post for a few days now, but I keep forgetting to re-charge my camera battery. So I am just going to explain, without pics, what we have been up to.

In Foods we have been exploring the nutrient of fat. We made butter, which was an interesting experiment, and we made cupcakes. With the cupcakes we made one batch fat free and the other batch with normal amounts of fat. The students did a taste test and most agreed they liked the fat-free option better.

In FACS the students had their first lab. It was the Thunder lab. Students made Thunder Juice (Orange Julius) and Thunder Twists (Pretzels). I think the students had a great time and their products turned out great. It was fun to see some of the pretzel shapes that were made.

In Clothing students have been working on the pj pants and the ULTIMATE SEWING CHALLENGE. Both are due next week, so maybe I will post some pics. So far the projects are looking awesome!!

In Teen Living we have started our dating unit. We played Battle of the Sexes, in which the girls slaughtered the boys. We start talking about the purposes of dating next week. Fun stuff!

Muffins

On Friday we had our muffin lab. Each group made a different kind of muffin, then we did a tasters table. it was interesting to see how the muffins turned out. The Raspberry Crumble muffins, in both classes, turned out great! The Orange Cranberry muffins turned out a little flat in both classes, but the flavor was great. And the Pumpkin Chocolate Chip turned out with holes in the middle... hmmm. Wonder what could have caused that....

Pasta! And Rice!

Today in Foods we continued talking about carbs. We talked about the difference between whole grain products and white products. Students sampled 3 different kinds of pastas (one veggie pasta, one whole wheat, and one enriched) and 2 different rices (wild/long grain combo and a brown rice). Many students admitted they had never sampled several of the options and that they enjoyed them.

Caramel Popcorn

We have started the carbohydrates unit in Foods. So, naturally, we had to have a mini lab making caramel popcorn because it is the prime example of a simple carb. Fun, easy lab.
